EndoFlip

What is an EndoFlip?

EndoFlip (Endolumenal Functional Lumen Imaging Probe) is a cutting-edge diagnostic tool that measures the dimensions and function of the esophagus, including its distensibility and pressure, in real-time. It is particularly useful in evaluating disorders such as achalasia, esophageal motility disorders, and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). At Gastrointestinal Medicine Associates, we use EndoFlip to gain detailed insight into esophageal function, helping to guide treatment for patients experiencing swallowing difficulties, reflux, or other esophageal disorders.

Why It's Important:

The esophagus plays a vital role in moving food from the mouth to the stomach, and dysfunctions in this process can lead to significant discomfort and health issues. EndoFlip allows us to measure the shape, size, and pressure within the esophagus during routine endoscopy. This real-time feedback helps diagnose conditions like achalasia, esophageal strictures, or dysphagia, and assists in determining the best course of treatment. EndoFlip is a highly accurate method for evaluating esophageal disorders that may not be fully understood through standard diagnostic tools like manometry or upper endoscopy alone.

How to Prepare for EndoFlip:

  1. Pre-procedure Instructions:

    • Fasting: You will need to fast for 8 hours before the procedure to ensure a clear esophageal evaluation.
    • Medication Adjustments: Inform your doctor of any medications you are taking, especially those that affect the esophagus or stomach. Your doctor may advise you to pause certain medications before the test.
  2. Before the Procedure:

    • EndoFlip is typically performed in conjunction with upper endoscopy. You will be sedated, and a thin catheter with a balloon at the tip is passed into your esophagus to measure its function.

When to Consider EndoFlip:

  • Swallowing Difficulties (Dysphagia): If you experience trouble swallowing or choking on food, EndoFlip can help diagnose underlying causes like achalasia or esophageal motility disorders.
  • Chronic GERD: For patients with chronic acid reflux, EndoFlip can provide detailed information about esophageal function and esophageal sphincter pressure, guiding treatment options.
  • Esophageal Surgery Assessment: EndoFlip is also valuable for evaluating the outcomes of esophageal surgeries like fundoplication or dilation, ensuring that the procedure successfully restored normal esophageal function.
