Barrx™ Treatment

What is Barrx™ Treatment?

Barrx™ Treatment, also known as radiofrequency ablation (RFA), is a specialized, minimally invasive procedure used to treat Barrett’s esophagus, a condition where the lining of the esophagus changes due to prolonged acid exposure from gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Over time, Barrett’s esophagus can increase the risk of developing esophageal cancer. The Barrx™ system effectively removes abnormal tissue using radiofrequency energy, significantly reducing the risk of progression to cancer. At Gastrointestinal Medicine Associates, we offer Barrx™ treatment as part of our commitment to providing comprehensive care for patients with Barrett’s esophagus.esophagus.

Why It's Important:

Barrett’s esophagus is a condition that results from long-term exposure to stomach acid, causing the normal lining of the esophagus to change. This abnormal tissue has the potential to turn into precancerous or cancerous cells over time. Barrx™ Treatment safely and effectively removes this abnormal tissue, offering a proactive approach to reducing the risk of esophageal cancer. It is considered a safe and effective treatment option with minimal discomfort and excellent outcomes.

How to Prepare for Barrx™ Treatment:

  1. Pre-procedure Instructions:

    • Dietary Restrictions: You will need to fast for 8-12 hours prior to the procedure to ensure the best results.
    • Medication Review: Let your doctor know about any medications you are taking, especially blood thinners or anti-inflammatory drugs, as these may need to be temporarily paused.
  2. Before the Procedure:

    • Barrx™ Treatment is typically performed during an upper endoscopy, where a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is passed through the mouth into the esophagus.
    • The Barrx™ device is attached to the endoscope and delivers radiofrequency energy to the abnormal tissue.

What to Expect During the Procedure:

  • Quick and Minimally Invasive: The procedure is done under sedation and takes about 30 minutes to an hour. Patients usually experience minimal discomfort during the procedure.
  • Ablation of Abnormal Tissue: The Barrx™ device delivers controlled radiofrequency energy to the abnormal areas in the esophagus, removing the diseased tissue while leaving healthy tissue intact.

The Procedure and Technology:

  • The Barrx™ system uses radiofrequency energy to precisely target and remove the abnormal tissue caused by Barrett’s esophagus. This process minimizes damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Over time, the treated area heals, and healthy esophageal lining grows in place of the abnormal cells.

When to Consider Capsule Endoscopy:

  • Unexplained GI Symptoms: Capsule endoscopy is ideal for patients with symptoms like unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain, or persistent diarrhea that have not been diagnosed through other methods.
  • Diagnosing Crohn’s Disease: If you have symptoms of Crohn’s disease or celiac disease, capsule endoscopy provides a thorough examination of the small intestine to assist in diagnosis.
  • Detecting Small Bowel Tumors: This procedure can also help detect small bowel polyps, tumors, or vascular lesions, making it a valuable diagnostic tool.
